Land Rover Defender – Power Folding Mirrors Retrofit

Short description: JLRCoding supplies a genuine Power Folding Mirrors kit, wiring harness, BCM/IRU activation, mirror‑position calibration and a full on‑road test for Defender MY23‑25. All‑in‑one price: £229 + VAT.

Technical Overview

The Power Folding Mirror (part 8U1400) replaces the manual side‑view mirrors with electrically actuated units that retract into the door pillar when the driver selects “Fold”. Mirror movement is commanded by the Intelligent Rear‑view Unit (IRU) and coordinated through the Body‑Control Module (BCM) on the vehicle CAN bus.

Defender L663 MY23‑25 ships with a pre‑drilled six‑pin connector, a dedicated 12 V feed, and factory‑mounted brackets. The retrofit therefore consists of a **hardware fit‑in** plus a **software enable**.

Component matrix
Component Part No. Specification
Power Folding Mirror – left 8U1400‑L Electric actuator, 45 mm travel, IP68
Power Folding Mirror – right 8U1400‑R Electric actuator, 45 mm travel, IP68
Wiring harness (PFM) 8U1410 6‑core shielded, 0.5 mm²
Body‑Control Module (BCM) 8U1110 Firmware ≥ 5.04, Power‑Fold flag support
Intelligent Rear‑view Unit (IRU) 8U1510 Firmware ≥ 5.02, Mirror‑control map
Calibration software TechTool PFM JLR diagnostic, mirror‑position upload

Why Upgrade to Power Folding Mirrors?

Four core advantages make the Power Folding Mirror retrofit highly valuable:

  1. One‑touch convenience: Mirrors fold automatically when the driver presses the door‑panel button or when the vehicle is locked, saving time and effort.
  2. Aerodynamic & protective benefit: Folded mirrors reduce drag and protect the glass from accidental impact on narrow off‑road passages.
  3. Seamless OEM integration: The system uses the factory door‑button, appears in the infotainment “Mirror” menu and supports the “auto‑fold on lock” feature – no aftermarket wiring is required.
  4. Resale uplift: A factory‑spec power‑folding option is a premium comfort feature that typically adds £1 000‑£1 500 to a Defender’s second‑hand value.

Eligibility & Pre‑Fit Checks

The retrofit is approved for Defender L663 MY23‑25 that satisfy the following conditions:

  • VIN confirms a 2023, 2024 or 2025 build (year code “W”, “X” or “Y”).
  • BCM firmware version ≥ 5.04 (validated with JLR TechTool).
  • The driver‑door harness contains the six‑pin Power‑Fold connector (visible after trim removal).
  • No active DTCs on the BCM or IRU after a quick OBD scan.
  • All interior door panels can be removed without damage to expose the mirror brackets.

If the factory connector is missing, a complete PFM harness (part 8U1410) is available as an optional add‑on.

Installation & Activation – Step‑by‑Step

  1. Power isolation: Disconnect the 12 V battery and wait at least 5 minutes to purge residual CAN voltage.
  2. Door‑panel removal: Unscrew the interior trim (M5 × 8 mm), gently pry the panel away, and expose the mirror mounting bolts and wiring conduit.
  3. Remove legacy mirrors: Unbolt the manual mirrors (M8 × 12 mm), disconnect the six‑pin connector, and set the old units aside.
  4. Fit electric mirrors: Seat the Power Folding Mirror (left/right) into the OEM brackets, torque the mounting bolts to 10 Nm, and route the new harness through the existing conduit.
  5. Connect wiring: Plug the six‑pin PFM harness (part 8U1410) into the door connector. Verify continuity of power, ground and CAN with a multimeter.
  6. Launch diagnostics: Re‑connect the battery, attach a JLR TechTool cable to the OBD‑II port and open the “Body Electronics” module.
  7. BCM firmware audit: Confirm firmware ≥ 5.04; if older, flash the latest version (v5.06) via TechTool → Update → Body Electronics.
  8. IRU coding: In TechTool → Vehicle Setup → Power Folding Mirrors select “Enable”. The tool writes the activation flag to the BCM and uploads the mirror‑control map to the IRU (v1.3).
  9. Mirror‑position calibration: Run the “PFM Calibration Wizard”. The wizard folds each mirror, records fully‑folded and fully‑opened positions, and stores the data in the IRU EEPROM.
  10. On‑road functional test: Conduct a short drive on a closed track:
    • Press the driver‑door “Fold Mirrors” button – both mirrors should retract within 2 seconds.
    • Lock the vehicle – mirrors must auto‑fold.
    • Unlock – mirrors should auto‑unfold.
    • Confirm the mirror‑status icon lights on the instrument cluster and that no DTCs appear.
  11. Re‑assembly: Re‑fit the interior door trim, torque the fasteners to 8 Nm and close the door.
  12. Documentation: Export a PDF “Power Folding Mirrors Upgrade Report” (VIN, timestamps, BCM & IRU firmware, calibration data) and hand the owner a printed “PFM Installation Certificate”.

Benefits for Workshops & Fleet Operators

  • Attractive margin: Standard price £229 + VAT – includes parts, labour, diagnostics and certification.
  • Repeatable workflow: Identical coding steps for every eligible Defender keep training time low.
  • Regulatory compliance: Upgrade complies with ECE R104 (electrically‑operated mirrors) and retains type‑approval.
  • Brand differentiation: Offering a genuine JLR power‑folding retrofit positions your centre as a premium‑technology specialist.

Pricing & Ordering Information

The all‑inclusive package contains:

  • Power Folding Mirror – left (part 8U1400‑L) and right (part 8U1400‑R).
  • Wiring harness (part 8U1410) and sealing gaskets.

To place an order, complete the JLRCoding contact form, select “Defender – Power Folding Mirrors Retrofit”, and attach a copy of the vehicle’s service history or VIN verification.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I need to replace the existing mirrors?
Yes – the retrofit swaps the manual mirrors for the electric units. The factory‑drilled brackets are already in place, so no additional fabrication is required.
Can the system be de‑activated later?
Using JLR TechTool the activation flag can be cleared, returning the vehicle to manual mirrors (the manual mirrors must be re‑installed).
Is there a warranty on the actuators?
Yes – a 12‑month warranty covers actuator failure, wiring defects or software issues. Original JLR components remain under the manufacturer’s standard warranty.
Will my insurance premium change?
Most insurers treat power‑folding mirrors as a comfort feature and do not adjust premiums, but you may wish to inform your provider.
