Land Rover Defender – Heated Steering Wheel Retrofit

Technical Overview

The Heated Steering Wheel (HSW) – part 8U1200 – is a low‑frequency (125 kHz) resistive heater that is bolted directly to the steering‑wheel hub. Consequently, power is drawn from the 12 V accessory circuit, and the heating level (Low/Medium/High) is selected via the steering‑wheel buttons on the driver’s side. Moreover, a dedicated thermostat (part 8U1205) regulates the temperature to prevent overheating.

The retrofit is approved for Defender L663 MY23‑25 that meet the following prerequisites:

  • VIN confirms a 2023‑2025 build (year code “W”, “X” or “Y”).
  • BCM firmware version ≥ 5.04 (checked with JLR TechTool).
  • The steering‑column already contains the factory‑drilled 4‑mm recess for the heater element.
  • No active DTCs on the BCM or ICCU after a brief OBD scan.
  • All interior trim panels can be removed safely to expose the steering‑wheel hub.

If the four‑pin wiring conduit is missing, a complete HSW harness (part 8U1210) can be supplied as a separate add‑on.

Installation & Activation – Step‑by‑Step Procedure

  1. Power isolation: First, disconnect the 12 V battery and wait a minimum of 5 minutes to clear residual CAN voltage.
  2. Steering‑wheel disassembly: Next, follow JLR Service Bulletin 30‑456‑A to remove the air‑bag module, then unbolt the steering‑wheel hub from the column.
  3. Fit the heater element: Afterwards, press the heated‑wheel coil into the factory‑drilled recess, secure it with the retaining screw (M6 × 20 mm) and torque to 8 Nm.
  4. Mount the thermostat: Subsequently, install the thermostat on the steering‑column bracket, route the HSW harness (part 8U1210) through the existing conduit, and connect to the BCM pins (pin 13 = HSW‑POWER, pin 14 = HSW‑GND).
  5. Diagnostic connection: Then, re‑connect the battery, attach a JLR TechTool cable to the OBD‑II port and open the “Body Electronics” module.
  6. BCM firmware check: After that, verify firmware ≥ 5.04; if an older version is present, update to the latest (v5.06) via TechTool → Update → Body Electronics.
  7. ICCU coding: Consequently, in TechTool → Vehicle Setup → Heated Steering Wheel choose “Enable”. The software writes the activation flag to the BCM and uploads the HSW control map to the ICCU (v2.0).
  8. Thermostat calibration: Moreover, run the “HSW Calibration Wizard”. The wizard cycles the heater through Low, Medium and High levels while measuring surface temperature, then stores the safe‑operating curve in the ICCU EEPROM.
  9. On‑road functional test: Finally, conduct a short drive on a closed area:
    • Set heating to “Low” – wheel surface should reach ~30 °C in 30 seconds.
    • Increase to “High” – temperature must not exceed 45 °C (factory‑set limit).
    • Verify that the HSW status icon lights on the instrument cluster and that no DTCs are logged.
  10. Re‑assembly: Subsequently, re‑install the steering‑wheel hub, torque the air‑bag mounting bolts to 12 Nm, and replace interior trim.
  11. Documentation: In addition, export a PDF “Heated Steering Wheel Upgrade Report” (VIN, timestamps, BCM & ICCU firmware, calibration data) and provide the owner with a printed “HSW Installation Certificate”.

Do I need to replace the steering wheel?
No – the retrofit installs a heating coil inside the existing hub. Consequently, the outer wheel cover remains unchanged.
