What Is the Activity Key – Gen 2?
- Jaguar F‑TYPE (2020‑2025)
- Jaguar XE (2020‑2024)
- Land Rover Range Rover (2020‑2025)
- Land Rover Defender (2020‑2025)
- Land Rover Discovery Sport (2021‑2025)
The Gen 2 key combines a 125 kHz RFID transponder, a 433 MHz (U‑BLOX) remote‑control transmitter and a near‑field inductive antenna for key‑less entry and start‑stop functions. All communications are encrypted with JLR’s proprietary AES‑256 keys, making a genuine OEM part mandatory for a reliable lock‑and‑start operation.

Programming the Activity Key – Gen 2 (TOPIx Workflow)
1️⃣ Prepare the Vehicle & Workstation
- Park on a flat surface, engage the hand‑brake and turn the ignition to “ON”.
- Connect a 70 A + battery maintainer to avoid voltage dip.
- Insert the OEM‑approved
JLR Enet Wi‑Fiadapter into the OBD‑II port. - Launch TOPIx on a laptop with internet access and log in with engineering credentials.
2️⃣ Read Existing Key Data (Optional)
- In TOPIx select Vehicle → Identify → Key Management.
- If a key is already programmed, use “Read Key Data” to back‑up the current EEPROM image (save as
KeyBackup_YYYYMMDD.bin).
3️⃣ Add the New Gen 2 Key
- Choose Key Management → Add New Key and select “Activity Key – Gen 2”.
- Place the new key on the JLR Enet Wi‑Fi antenna (the adapter has an integrated NFC field).
- Press the “Learn” button on the vehicle’s driver‑door lock (usually hidden behind a trim piece) for 5 seconds – the vehicle will enter “Key Learning Mode”.
- TOPIx will automatically download the encrypted transponder data, write it to the vehicle’s BCM, and store the public key in the CCF.
- When the process finishes, the UI shows a green tick and the key ID (e.g.,
KEY‑01‑GEN2‑2024).
4️⃣ Verify & Test
- Run Key Management → Validate. TOPIx will poll the key and confirm the cryptographic handshake.
- Test the physical functions: lock/unlock, trunk release, and “Start‑Button” proximity detection.
- Clear any DTCs that may have appeared (
C0A10‑00– Key Authentication Failed) using the “Clear Fault Codes” command.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I program a Gen 2 key with a generic OBD‑II scanner?
No. The Activity Key – Gen 2 uses JLR‑specific encrypted transponder data that can only be written through the TOPIx + Enet Wi‑Fi interface, which validates the AES‑256 signature.
Will the key work on all model years (2020‑2025)?
Yes, provided the vehicle’s BCM firmware supports Gen 2 (all 2020‑onward builds do). For pre‑2020 vehicles you need a Gen 1 key (part # JPLA‑14D013‑BP).
How long does the programming take?
The whole process – from connection to validation – typically takes 8‑10 minutes for an experienced technician.
Is the key covered by JLR warranty?
When installed with the correct TOPIx calibration, the key is covered under JLR’s 12‑month/12 000 km warranty. Keep the calibration checksum as proof of proper installation.
